Hank aspired to be a writer more than he did a singer. The biggest thrill of his life was to have somebody sing one of his songs. A few times, especially after some of the pop artists like Tony Bennett started recording some of his songs–Tony Bennett had a big hit record on “Cold, Cold Heart”–we’d be in a restaurant or somewhere that had a jukebox and he’d ease over and if that record was on there he’d play it. Then he’d come back to the table like nothing had happened, but you could just see the pride rolling off of him.
